Well, I had one of those epiphany moments on my 16 miler last friday. I was chugging along and then around mile 10 I thought, forget 26.2 miles I don't even want to finish 16. So I did 12 and went home. Happy because I figured it out. A huge difference from a week prior when I was registering for membership to USATF because clearly I was going to win the $2000 for overall female. Ha.
So now we're going into summer where there is a 5k on every block every weekend. Let me just say I hate 5k's. I've never done well in a 5k. The last 5k I ran was 19:28, a pr over 2 years ago. However, McMillan says I can do better based on my marathon time of 3:02:
In fact, this says all my pr's are crap. But because I love a challenge I will try the 5k again. I never really trained for a 5k so that could have something to do with it. Or I just suck at shorter stuff. We shall see! This means I have to do TRACK. I never did track for my marathon training but for 5k I probably should.
I've been running 6:50 pace since Eugene. It's like my legs are stuck in that pace. 5 miles or 12 it's the same pace. So I hope to shake things up and not run my marathon pace in a 5k. Fingers crossed!

smart decision for you. go get you some pr's and then run that sub 3 this Fall. You are already guaranteed entry into Boston and I'm pretty sure WHEN you run under 3 they will re-seed you before the race if you notify them. Oh, my pr;s are 5k-18:40, 10K-39:00, and 10 mile-64:42. I expect you to break them this year.
ReplyDeleteI love track, but we don't alway run on the track, the session we are doing tonight will be fast slow 500m's... so it is 500m at 3km pace followed by 500m at marathon pace till you can't!!! (can run at 5km pace and marathon pace in training for a longer race)
ReplyDeleteThis session is done on the road and Mr. Garmin beeps as the 500m ends. You don't need a track to do track. That said I love the track and you can love it toooo!!! just remember one thing never run track to fast, if you train at the right pace you can enjoy the track.
You are a strong runner (3h02 marathon!!!!!!!) so pop down to the track and run a couple of 400m, but don't race them, run them at 85sec pace, and take 60 rest (walking there and back)you should manage 10-20!!! (maybe start at 10 and add 2 each week)If you want to run 400m's in 80sec, you need to run a faster race (10:00 3km) or be training for a shorter race (mile)and running less of them.
Now there are a couple of ideas, I hope you build a love for track work (speed work) and enjoy getting even faster...
Nice to hear even the mighty, mighty Labella has a bad outing once in awhile! It does seem like it takes longer than usual to fully recover from a marathon. Are you running Market Square Day this year? -Bob
